If antidepressants haven’t given you the relief you hoped for, you’ve probably heard of TMS therapy. If you or your family use Tricare, your next question is likely whether Tricare will pay for it.

The short answer is yes. Tricare covers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for adults with major depression. The longer answer involves a few requirements, and getting them right from the start can save you weeks. Here’s what Tucson-area service members, veterans and military families should know in 2026.

What is TMS therapy?

TMS is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment for depression. A magnetic coil rests against your head and sends gentle pulses to the part of the brain that helps regulate mood. That area is often underactive in people with depression.

There’s no anesthesia and no recovery time. You stay awake for each session and can drive yourself home or back to work afterward. A typical course is short sessions five days a week for about six weeks.

Does Tricare cover TMS?

Yes. Tricare covers TMS as an outpatient treatment for adults with major depressive disorder. Arizona is in the Tricare West Region, which has been managed by TriWest Healthcare Alliance since January 1, 2025.

Brainwave Neuro Performance Center is in-network with Tricare West for TMS for depression. In-network means:

  • Lower out-of-pocket costs than an out-of-network clinic.
  • We submit the authorization paperwork to TriWest for you.

Who qualifies under Tricare?

TriWest’s current TMS policy (updated April 2026) sets clear criteria. In general, you’ll need to:

  1. Be 18 or older.
  2. Have a diagnosis of major depressive disorder as your primary diagnosis.
  3. Have tried at least two antidepressants from different medication classes, each for six weeks or longer, without enough improvement.
  4. Get preauthorization from TriWest before your first session.

Brainwave’s standard TMS course is five sessions a week for six weeks. TriWest’s policy allows up to 36 TMS sessions within a 90-day window, so a standard course fits inside that limit. Your approval will confirm exactly how many sessions are authorized.

You may see other clinics list different rules, such as one failed medication, four failed medications, or an age limit of 15. Those come from older policies or simple errors. Ask any clinic you’re considering which version of the policy they’re following.

What Tricare Doesn’t Cover

It’s worth knowing the limits up front:

  • TMS for conditions other than depression. This includes PTSD, anxiety or OCD on their own, and bipolar disorder. If depression is your primary diagnosis and you also have PTSD or anxiety, TMS for your depression can still be covered.
  • MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy). TriWest treats MeRT as an emerging technology, so it isn’t a Tricare benefit. Brainwave offers MeRT as a self-pay option, with 20% off for veterans, service members, and first responders.

How to Get TMS Covered: Step by Step

  1. Get a referral if you’re on Tricare Prime. Your PCM submits the referral to Tricare, and it includes authorization for your initial consultation at Brainwave. Tricare Select members don’t need a referral and can skip this step.
  2. Meet with our provider. Every patient has an initial consultation before we request TMS authorization. We’ll review your symptoms, diagnosis and medication history, and we may request records from your other providers to support your authorization.
  3. We request authorization from TriWest and follow up until there’s a decision.
  4. Start treatment. Once approved, you’ll get a schedule for your sessions at our Tucson office on North La Cholla Boulevard.

What Will it Cost?

Active-duty service members pay nothing out of pocket for covered care. Retirees and family members may owe a copay or cost-share, depending on whether they’re on Tricare Prime or Select. We verify your benefits before treatment starts, so you know your costs in advance.

Why Tucson Military Families Choose Brainwave

  • Veteran-owned. We understand military culture, the pressure to “push through,” and the stigma that keeps people from asking for help.
  • Tricare West in-network for TMS for depression.
  • We handle the paperwork: records requests, the TriWest authorization and the follow-up.
  • Close to Davis-Monthan AFB, and a manageable drive for Fort Huachuca and Sierra Vista families.
